ADV Moto Haven

Adventuring in the Algarve
Adventuring in the Algarve

This is the time of year when a lot of us look to travelling to Europe on two wheels.

While we might have all the kit and the best of bikes, one of the things that many of us are short on is time. What we’ve seen over the last number of years is tour companies who offer ‘fly-ride’ solutions to this particular problem.

One of the offerings that I really like is the adventure motorcycling ones. Companies such as ADV Moto Haven in Portugal’s Algarve are just one such operation. Everything is made simple for the time pressed amongst us. The package is designed to be so simple that even I can make it work!

While I have got quite a bit of off-road experience, I still find the genre a little intimidating. What my hosts, Tania and Greg have done is create something that they would like to visit. The bikes that they rent are fresh and well-maintained CF Moto 450 machines. Then there’s actually getting out to ride. I was impressed to see that the guys were happy to ride with me until I got comfortable. While they didn’t, and don’t, offer instruction they were very happy to share their experience of riding on the plentiful trails in their ‘neighbourhood’.

Tanya was quite clear that everyone has to start somewhere and rather than being thrown in at the deep end they were there to offer support to the novice or nervous rider while leaving more experienced ones to spread their wings! What both extremes and everything in between have is everything else sorted so that I can simply concentrate on enjoying riding the bike.

Accommodation is simple with two bed cabins, breakfast and dinner are included. Two and three day bookings are the most popular. There’s also an option to use one of those acoustic motorcycles, the ones with the pedals. Ghastly!

One of the significant things that I really liked was the atmosphere that the guys have created. It’s a quiet, comfortable place to stay. Because there is so much space to ride and I could go get lost, yet use the supplied sat nav to get back is a really nice touch. Very best of all I wasn’t thrown in with a group I didn’t know and asked to ride with riders of different skill levels.
