Triumphs Speed Triple RS is ready for a new season

Still looking great after all these years!
The original Speed Triple from Triumph was always the ‘surprise’ bike from the range. Even though it was ‘only’ a 675cc machine the chassis and the torque delivered by the triple engine made it a giant killer on the track and on the road. It was just so easy to use and handled sublimely. The company have updated the range over the years. Now they’ve added a new 1200RS to the range the coming season.

Insert 'Sping in your step' joke here
That, now legendary, handling is made better thanks to an Öhlins electronic suspension set up. This one is the Swedish companies SmartEC3 semi active system. More rider aids and technology are part of the package. With 180bhp on a naked bike, the rider is going to need all the help that they can get! Meanwhile the 128Nm of torque delivered via the latest version of that triple engine is going to insure that it’s not loosing its reputation as a bike that needs a smaller than legal reg plate.

'T' is for three and 'T' is for Triumph
The motor features a, not new but revised, dynamic crankshaft balancing strategy This makes for a smoother ride and engine pick up.
Supercorsa track /road hybrid tyres are as standard for those of us who still ride our bikes to trackdays! Stopping is done via a set of Brembo Stylema® calipers and an MCS span and ratio adjustable lever from the same people.

Very nice indeed!
Excellent ergonomics are complimented with a wet weight of 200 kilos. Then there’s all that technology. Its suspension features Öhlins Objective Based Tuning Interface (OBTi). This one is pretty cool. It allows the rider to adjust the suspension’s dynamic damping characteristics in different riding scenarios. There are seven of them covering front firmness, rear firmness, braking support, acceleration support, initial acceleration support, cornering support and cruising support.

Both fearless and talanted!
Launch control keeps unwanted wheelies at bay while the engine braking is less harsh Control and Brake Slide Control, as well as fully adjustable cruise control. There’s the fuelling /power options which allow the rider to set the bike up as they wish. The track setting parameters look particularly interesting! Both the ABS and the traction control are of the cornering variety and the intensity of all of this is set by the rider and displayed on a TFT screen. There’s even a Bluetooth navigator and phone connection built into the screen.

Black on black
All the good stuff is still there. The twin front lights, the single sided swing arm and the seat cowl are all part of the show, if somewhat refined. Keyless ignition is also part of the new machine.
The only colour to have is that new Jet Black one. If, however, you’re feeling as special as your mammy says you are then there’s a Granite and Diablo Red offering as well as a Granite and Performance Yellow one. The accessory range is staggering!
