Back in the day the sidecar outfit, the name applied to both the motorcycle and the ‘chair’ attached to it were ubiquitous. In broadly simple terms the rider bought a bike. They then met the love of their life and now had a pillion. After a certain amount of time the relationship flourished to the point where they had a child, or two, and a sidecar was added.
All of this was quite cost effective and never involved the expense of buying either a new bike or, ‘shudder’ a car.

These days they’re not nearly as commonplace as a lot has changed since then. What they are is a unique way of travelling that, when made by companies such as Watsonian Squire, manage to instil a true sense of adventure into motorcycling.
While they have a significant range, they have fitted everything from a Goldwing to a scooter, the latest one is an ‘Adventure’ model, and it really captures the genre perfectly. Yes indeed, Watsonian Get Adventurous with a new machine.
In this case they’ve married an existing model of sidecar, the Grand Prix, to a Royal Enfield Interceptor.

While the ‘chair’ can be purchased separately the company have an option to supply the complete outfit and in this case the result is a bit of a masterpiece.
The fitout utilises a range of accessories. These include a pair of power sockets as well as a map reading light. There are a full set of three luggage racks, two on the rear and one in front of the screen. These supplement the carrying capacity of the boot of the car. There’s even a grab rail for the passenger. All three wheels are shod on knobblies and there’s even a handlebar-controlled spotlight in the package.

Watsonian have added their own paint scheme to both the bike and the chair as well as a headlight grill and a set of hand guards. The trim is a subtle black.

Very best of all and one of the coolest features I’ve seen on anything in quite a while are the pair of 5-litre jerry cans. These are mounted in carriers that are bolted to brackets on the sidecar frame. Even if they were never used, they add so much to the bikes look that the machine should never be seen without them!
The team at Sprocket and Hubs in Clane supply and rent Watsonian sidecars here in Ireland. Give them a call on 061605493. If you ask nicely, you might even get a test ride…
