The bikes that dreams were made of

At this stage the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club (VJMC) has been going longer than some of the bikes on display have been registered. This coming May the 4th, (enter Star Wars pun here), now the VJMC Show comes to town with their annual show in Swords at the National Show Centre.
While older American and English bikes are always highly regarded as well as the German bikes from years gone by are well presented, the Japanese stuff has always been a little less so. The VJMC team are to be commended for the good work that they do in keeping a real world representation of the lineage of some of the greatest examples of motorcycle innovation alive.

A lot of what will be on display will date from the seventies. There are significant machines including the much loved Honda 50, or the ‘Gapper’ as it was fondly known in Dublin. This wonderful nickname stems from the fact that it was a highly effective commuter as a result of its ability to fit, with ease, through the smallest of gaps in Dublin traffic.
The legendary Suzuki Katana as well as Harris framed machines from the nineties will be displayed alongside Honda NR and Fireblade as well as the Yamaha R7, the original one, and not the latest parallel twin incarnation.

Then there are the host of two stroke engined bikes. Kawasakis KR 1 beasts get a look in as does the RGV steeds as well as the Yamaha TZR and the bank robber choice of bike, the RD 350!
Everything on display will be entered into a best bike of the show competition, one which is even open to non members of the club.
It’s not just the bikes themselves. There will also be a ‘jumble sale’ of sorts which will feature all sorts of bits and pieces that the enthusiastic restorer might find very useful.

The show is proudly sponsored by Principal Insurance.
The show takes place this coming May 4th on the Sunday of the Bank Holiday weekend.
There are a number of stalls available which always attract auto jumble sellers, as well as some of the trade. If you’re in the selling game and are interested in booking a stall, please give Jason a call on 0872603236.
The National Show Centre in Swords is, once again, this years venue. Accompanied children get in for free, with the taller amongst us pay a very reasonable €15.
The event is more than family friendly and runs from 10.30am until 4.30pm, so there’s plenty of time to get dinner ready!
