I was in Waterford recently for Waterford Harley Davidsons 22nd birthday. There was a selection of bikes to test ride as well as deals to be had on kit as well as some pretty good music and a more than decent lunch. Just after lunch the team from the Solas Cancer Support Centre in the city dropped by to collect a donation from the local motorcycle clubs.

The people of the city, and the rest of the southeast, have supported the organisation since it was founded in 2009. Since then, it’s grown to become a first-class cancer support service.
While it’s heartbreaking that these services are necessary it’s also good to see them being so well delivered.

A number of services are offered by the centre. These are practical and include reflexology, massage and reiki as well as a therapeutic service. So rather than offering any kind of medical service or advice, they put the tools and supports together to allow people to deal with their illnesses while supporting their families through the most difficult of times.

Their counselling services are available via a services co-ordinator. The idea here is to support the individual concerned with a confidential listening resource. Based on feedback from the people who’ve used this counselling, it seems to make a very big difference with frequent references to learning not to let the obvious condition to take a person’s self-confidence away. Having a service that allows the client to find a sense of personal clarity makes Solas worth its’ weight in gold to many.

Reflexology, reiki and massage allow for a relaxing and practical comforting support. Relieving stress and worry as well as helping to facilitate healthy sleep patterns, these also help with pain management, muscle relaxation and enhancing a feeling of well-being.
Solas Cancer Care have enjoyed the support of the motorcycling community in Waterford since the very start. As an illness that effects so many people it seems only right that this is the case. Well done to all concerned and should you need to know anymore Solas are here to advise and help.
