A whole new style of boot

I have a new pair of boots and they’re like nothing I’ve seen before, never mind worn. They’re the new Furygan Chattan D3O Boots and they look refreshingly different to any other boots I’ve seen on the market.

A pair of boots that are waterproof and breathable are something that I always appreciate, I cover a lot of miles and wet feet are no fun. Not even a little bit. But these new Chattan things have a whole lot more.

In order to keep my lower legs, ankles and feet safe in the event of my enthusiasm, or someone else’s, overwhelming my skill they have been fitted with D30 armour. D30 make micro lock protection. This means that the pieces within the boot remain light and perfectly flexible and then lock at a molecular level to provide an exceptional amount of protection in the event of an impact. These are built into the shins, heels and toes. They are also incorporated into the soles.

The soles are made by none other than Michelin! The quality of the walking grip and flexible and is a very pleasant surprise. Additionally, rather than having a heavy protective piece along their length they are also built with that same D30 armour incorporated. Once again, the D30 stuff compliments the grippy sole, in so far as it takes nothing away from its’ flexibility and adds no noticeable weight to them.

And then there’s putting them on and taking them off. My current all weather boots, a pair of excellent TCX Gore-Tex affairs, use an old fashioned and well proven set of clasps that snap shut one at a time. Adjusting them is a one at a time process and can be a little fiddly. These new Chattans have a closer rather like a BOA system as seen on running shoes and such. This one is made by a company called Atop and it works in a slightly different way, but still allows for a perfect fit every time and with effortless ease. The posh term for these is ‘micrometric tightening’. There’s even a pull loop on the back of the calf to help get them on.

In order to keep the rain out while still letting them breathe they are fitted with a strong, high tenacity, polyester membrane which is treated with a water repellent compound. There’s a gear shift protector. You can choose from tiny little pixie feet size all the way up to disturbingly large. They’re available in black as well as a grey that I’m just not sure about.

They’re available from Kennedys in Drogheda, or for more details see www.furygan.com.
