Furygan Put Their Back Into It

As the season winds to a close it would be easy enough to pack everything away until next spring. But as seasoned riders have learned it’s the ideal time to start prepping for spring. Believe it or not that’s not too far away!

Until relatively recently we associated the fast riders only with racing. More and more, however, we’re seeing better and better riders coming to track days. Lower costs than racing, a closed circuit and the ability to ride without speed limits are all part of the attraction. What is changing around how these events run and who’s attending them is becoming more and more defined by the quality of the bikes and kit being used. A lot of this stuff would put smaller race teams to shame.

A new back protector is always a good place to start. A few years ago, an independent back protector was a must. These days, while one is still acceptable, wearable air bag technology has become more affordable and easier to use. At this point all of the big brands make at least one suit in their range air bag ready and all either make their own or have specialist partners who make bespoke ones for them. Where these things are concerned Furygan put their back into it

These airbags are managed by an electronic system which is embedded in the suit. Modern ones feature a control unit within the protector that triggers when it detects a fall or accident is happening. It does this by using sensors that make up to 1,000 calculations per second. This rapid processing of the data allows the airbag to ‘know’ when it’s all going horribly wrong and it’ll inflate in half the time that it takes to blink. A full charge on one of these things takes from two to three hours and is good for 30.

Our French friends in In&motion make these units for RST and Furygan amongst others. Each one can be set to a choice of settings depending on the environment that they’re being worn in as well as the wearers style of riding.

To that end there are five different detection modes to choose from. There’s a standard road setting, one for riding on track as well as adventure riding. Quite interestingly, there’s now even one for motocross.

Each one protects the wearers abdomen, thorax, spine and neck and can be triggered up to five times before it needs a factory reset. It has to be said though, if you’re triggering one of these five times in a season, you’re either trying too hard or you should switch pastimes and take up golf…
